If you were not at the Cool Race on Sunday, March 15th, you missed another great event. FATRAC volunteers stayed warm and dry as we cheered on the 400+ riders storming around the course. Our hats are off to these dedicated racers who pushed themselves to the limit. We also wish to thank Sean and Mary Allen and Lisa Kodle for spearheading this annual event.

On Saturday, March 7 Mike's Bikes sponsored FATRAC's trailwork to prepare the Olmstead Loop for the Cool Mountain Bike Race next Sunday. We cut back a great deal of berry bushes and poison oak so that the racers can have a fun, safe experience. Stop by our booth at the race and join us for our trailwork next month.

Paul, Franke, and Joe from FATRAC met another rider at Flour Garden. Four of them took carpooled from Auburn and met 3 others at the reservoir. The ride began at Vista Point near the Marina end of the lake and headed toward 49, turning on Old Camptonville Rd to access the north end of the trail. Half way through, they decided to do a loop within a loop, climbing up 7 Ball trail and back down Rebel Ridge trail. Traction was tricky, but the trail was in good shape. They moved a couple of downed trees aside and only had to hike over two larger ones. A little blood, a couple mechanicals, but it turned out to be a beautiful sunny day. Before returning, seven riders rode memorable 28 scenic miles in about 4.5 hrs. You won't want to miss this one the next time it comes around.

[img_assist|nid=575|title=Feb 21 Crew|desc=|link=node|align=left|width=200|height=117]Once again the weather gods were smiling on FATRAC as our monthly club ride took place on Saturday, Feb. 21st in almost perfect weather. About 15 riders showed up for the 12-mile ride around FDLT and the ‘rollercoaster’ section of the Connector. The trail is in pretty good shape, with just enough muddy spots to give your bike and jersey that ‘ya, I ride in the winter’ look. Don’t feel too bad if you missed this month’s Try the Divide; there’s another chance to join us on March 21.

[img_assist|nid=571|title=Fry Ride|desc=|link=node|align=right|width=200|height=125] If you did not join the 35 riders on FDLT on Feb. 1, you missed your last chance to ride with former FATRAC president Sue Fry before she leaves the area for a few years. She promised to be back and ride with us in the future, but it may be a while. We rode the Foresthill Divide Loop Trail and part of the Connector. The weather was sunny and warm and everyone had a great ride. We continued the celebration with pizza and beer after the ride.

[img_assist|nid=562|title=Cronan Ranch|desc=|link=node|align=left|width=200|height=125]On Saturday, Jan. 31, George led a great ride into the Cronan Ranch area along the Magnolia trail. Eight riders showed up and enjoyed the combined single track and fire roads as we went down to the river and up along the ridges. It ended up being a little over 16 miles with very little mud. The weather was sunny and warm. A group stopped in Cool for sandwiches on the way home. Keep you eyes on the FATRAC calendar for our next Cronan ride.

"...and now I want to give back."

These words were spoken after the trailwork on Sunday, Jan. 18, over a sandwich and drinks at the local deli. We had just joined 26 other mountain bikers for our monthly trailwork at Granite Bay sponsored by THE HUB bike shop in Roseville. We spent the morning cutting back brush and fixing erosion problems and were basking in the afternoon sun talking about ways that mountain biking has made us more healthy, stress-free individuals. As president of the club, I was especially glad to hear people talk about ways that our club has been successful. There are a number of jobs that we need volunteers to help out. Is it time for you to start giving back to the sport? You will not regret getting involved. Just contact me and we will find something that fits your talents and time limitations.

Well, we know there are at least 25 smart people in the Sacramento/Auburn area. Those are the ones who knew that an unusually warm winter day combined with near perfect trail conditions was an excellent time to join FATRAC on its monthly “Try the Divide” club ride. Due to cold nights and an unfortunate lack of rain, the Foresthill Divide Loop Trail was dust and mud free. The riders split into 3 groups, lead by Franke, Phred, and Bert, to accommodate the variety of skills and interests. While many of us started with light jackets or other layers of clothing, most of us finished wearing just shorts and a jersey. The 3 groups met up again at the top of the Loop for some chili, chips, sodas, and the usual bike stories. Several even expressed interest in volunteering for Sunday’s trail work day at Granite Bay. The weather should be great then as well. Thanks to Jason, Mr.” I know poison oak when I see it,” and Patrick, Mr. “I forgot my bike in the shop,” for fixing lunch.

[img_assist|nid=548|title=FDLT|desc=|link=node|align=right|width=200|height=135]On Sunday, Jan. 11, four riders enjoyed a ride on the Foresthill Divide Loop Trail. We started at the top so that we could enjoy the roller coaster with fresh legs, and then returned from Clementine on the Connector and the south side of the loop. The trail is in great shape and the new sections flow much better than they did when they were straight gully drops. If we ever get the rain we so desperately need, it will shed off the trail nicely. Join us next week for the Try the Divide Ride on Saturday, Jan. 17 and the trail work at Granite Bay on Sunday, Jan. 18.
